Hail and Farewell LuncheonOn May 6, we welcomed 12 NE area swabs and said good-bye to 4 of our First Class cadets and their families at our annual Welcome and Farewell Luncheon.  We had a great turnout with 80 people in attendance at the Alumni Center.  Thanks to a sunny, warm day, our guests were able to enjoy a view of the new sports fields and many boats on the Thames from the deck outside the function room.  The Navy even cooperated by sending a sub up river!  Upon arrival, families of our Swabs were presented with a green carnation corsage and our 2006 families were presented with a blue one.  After our initial greeting period, our guests enjoyed pizza, subs, numerous salads, snacks, desserts and our CGA cake.  Following the luncheon, families of the Class of 2006 were presented with a gift to commemorate their Cadet’s first cutter assignment.  Donna McElroy (08) presented each 2010 family with an orange “Swab Survival Gift Bag” and a NE Chapter booklet, which contained valuable information on Reporting-In Day, Swab Summer, Mystic and a listing of important websites.  Following the meal, the Class of 2010 were afforded an opportunity to ask questions of our most experienced parents from the Class of 2006 as well as our First Class Cadets in attendance.  1/c George MacDonnell and 1/c Jonathan Wolstenholme did an incredible job answering questions posed by the Swabs and their parents in a respectful, humorous and gracious manner.

Needless to say, we could not have put on such a successful luncheon without the help, effort, support and enthusiasm of our volunteers.  I’m very proud to be a part of this group of incredibly talented, giving individuals who never had to be asked to pitch in; they just knew what had to be done and did it.  (Your Cadets would be very proud!)  Most importantly, they made sure that our new Swabs and their families felt welcomed.  And while we shared a few tears with a couple of Moms reminiscing about our own experiences of Reporting-In Day, everyone left the luncheon with a smile on their face.  Be sure to visit the NE Chapter website to see photos of our special day!
