David Smith; David was born in SF and raised in a small town called Milford, CA. He learned about the Coast Guard when he saw a Road Rules episode on MTV that took place on a Coast Guard Cutter. While doing research, his advisor mentioned the Academy. David applied and was accepted to the Minority Into to Engineering (MITE) where his thoughts about the Academy where confirmed. “When I went there the summer of my junior year” David said “it was everything I thought I would be and more!” David spent a year at the Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS) before entering the Academy. David is now a 1st class and has been studying government. When he graduates, he hopes to be stationed in the West Coast area.

James Reily; James Reily graduated from Lick Wilmerding High School, San Francisco, California, in June, 2004. Although James is a "Navy brat" he is a Golden Gate guy born and bred. He was born at the Oakland Navy Hospital when his parents, both naval officers (now retired) were stationed in the Bay Area. He moved with his family from San Francisco, to Philadelphia, to Newport, to Japan, to San Diego and finally back to San Francisco. Although he has always loved the ocean and anything having to do with it, James became serious about pursuing a maritime career when he was a junior in high school. His parents encouraged him to look into the Coast Guard as well the Navy. After learning more about the Coast Guard's mission and visiting the Academy, the USCGA became his first choice. James is majoring in civil engineering. He has enjoyed being on the academy's swim team and playing club water polo. He has also enjoyed singing with the glee club and will join the ranks of the Idlers this year. He had a fabulous time cruising the Pacific this summer on the USCGC Jarvis based in Honolulu, Hawaii. While on Jarvis he visited Japan, Korea and Alaska.
