Minutes of the Fall 2007 General Membership Meeting
October 12, 2007
United States Coast Guard Academy – Parent’s Weekend
Officers, current member, and new member introductions were made.
A review of the meeting minutes from April 21, 2007 was made by Joan Miller. Minutes were approved without discussion.
Treasurer’s Report – Debra Greenly
Ending Balance as of September 30, 2007 reported $3,646.39.
R-Day Membership Income responsible for good early
balance. Not including Parent’s R-Day sales and expenses.
R-Day Picnic – co-sponsored by DelVal & Chesapeake chapters – should continue in 2008.
Current balance in line with past numbers.
Treasurer’s report accepted.
Ways & Means – Rich Vihonski
R-Day table sales were $2,300. Always need
volunteers to help. May want to propose helicopter pins for sale
at next meeting. Other items may also be proposed.
Donation from proceeds went back to the Academy.
Will need to solicit from new members to take over Ways & Means in the next 2 years.
Delaware Valley donated back $3,000 to CGA:
$2,000 for Company day room flat screen TV’s
$1,000 for Cadet Sponsorship
Report from the National Meeting – Rich Vihonski
Paul Kauffman presented future family opportunities
and requests from the national parent’s meeting held earlier in
the day.
Reported that USCGA gets $20 M to run the Academy each year.
Number will be increased to $24 M of which $5 M is flexible.
Chase Hall will be expanded and refurbished under a 5 phase plan over 10 years.
Discussed Cadet Sportsmanship Award.
Engineering program being reviewed for curriculum.
There are 580 Academy partners throughout the US to promote the Academy.
CGA Graduate Assignments – 85% to sea, 15% to air and land operations.
Discussed summer cadet experience at small boat stations.
National Meeting for all at 8:00 AM on Saturday at Leamy.
Paul Kauffman thanked Capt. Bibeau for help with R-Day picnic.
Committee Chair Reports
2011 Cadet Welcome Picnic – Charlene Delanoy
Twelve new cadets attended welcome picnic at Air Station Atlantic City.
Good attendance, real events – search & rescue
Received a $50.00 donation, the cost was $68.00. Therefore, the net cost was $18.00.
Charlene has offered to organize the picnic again
for the summer of 2008 (incoming class of 2012) at Air Station Atlantic
City.
Charlene has been trained as an Academy Partner and
is attending college fairs in NJ and contacting prospective cadets
about application questions.
Pre R-Day Social – Paul Kauffman
Need a new volunteer chairperson from our chapter to
work with the C&P chapter to organize next year’s social on
June 29, 2008 (Class of 2012).
Interested volunteers should contact Paul Kauffman.
All Academies Ball – Joan Miller
Joan reviewed what the ball is about and how it works.
The 2007 ball will be hosted by West Point parents
and will be at the Union League in Philadelphia on the night of
December 26, 2007.
All academies provide $500 seed money for a total of $2,500.
This year cadets will receive a gift card. The
committee is requesting gift cards or donations towards the purchase of
cards.
Our chapter needs to provide 20 – 25 cards,
with a suggested value of $15 - $50. They recommend $20 -
$25. Joan will be at the December meeting to receive donations.
The committee has a website where people can respond to ball invitations, www.allacademiesball.org.
Nina McElroy, a 2011 parent, has offered to take
over for Joan after this year. Nina will work with Joan to learn
position.
USCGA and USMMA will host jointly in 2 years, December 2009.
New Business – Paul Kauffman
Reviewed current budget balance at $3,646.39.
Proposal made for $2,600 contribution to USCGA from
the DelVal Chapter for Chase Hall Day Room renovations. A motion
was made, seconded, and passed by voice vote.
Rich and Peggy Vihonski reported that the next National Meeting will be in February, 2008.
Next DelVal Chapter meeting will be in December at
the Philadelphia CG Station. Academy partners and prospective
candidates will be invited.
